DHI hair transplant cost for shaven, partial shaven and unshaven DHI

A DHI hair transplant is a form of FUE where grafts are loaded into a pen shaped implanter and placed directly into the scalp, without opening channels first. Extraction is the same as classic FUE. Clinics usually charge a premium over a standard package, which runs at $1,800 to $5,000 in Turkey.

Typical FUE package in Turkey
$1,800 to $5,000
Grafts per session
Often lower than classic FUE, around 1,500 to 3,000
Main difference
Implantation with a pen, no separate channels

Shaven, partial shaven and unshaven DHI cost

The shave option changes the price more than most patients expect. Every row below is the same technique; what changes is how much hair the team has to work around, which slows extraction and placement.

Option What gets trimmed Grafts per day Price compared with shaven FUE
Full shave DHI Donor and recipient areas Often 2,500 to 3,500 Usually a modest premium for the pens
Partial shaven DHI Donor area only, or a hidden donor strip Often 1,500 to 3,000 Higher, because extraction and placement take longer
Unshaven (long hair) DHI A narrow donor strip hidden under longer hair Often 1,000 to 2,000 Highest, and fewer surgeons offer it

Clinic price guides commonly put DHI 20 to 40 percent above their own shaven FUE price for the same graft count, and unshaven work at the top of that range. Use the base FUE estimates below as the floor, then ask each clinic for its DHI figure in writing.

2,000 $1,400 to $4,000 $3,000 to $7,000 $8,000 to $24,000
3,000 $2,100 to $6,000 $4,500 to $10,500 $12,000 to $36,000

How DHI differs from classic FUE

Both methods harvest grafts one by one from the donor area. The difference is in how the grafts go into the thinning zone.

Step Classic FUE DHI
Extraction Punch of 0.7 to 1.0 mm Same punch
Recipient sites Channels opened first with steel or sapphire blades Created by the implanter needle while placing
Placement Grafts placed with forceps Grafts loaded into pens and pushed in
Shaving Usually full shave Recipient area can stay longer in some cases
Session size Large sessions common Often smaller, because placement is slower

When surgeons suggest DHI

DHI gives the person placing grafts control over angle, direction and depth in one movement. Surgeons often like it for hairlines and for adding density between existing hairs, because there are no pre made channels that could damage native hair nearby.

It is slower and needs more implanter pens and skilled staff, so very large sessions are less common. If you need 4,000 grafts or more, many surgeons prefer classic FUE or a mixed approach.

  • Hairline refinement and temple work
  • Adding density among existing hair
  • Patients who want to keep longer hair in the recipient area
  • Smaller to medium sessions

The procedure

A DHI session from start to finish

The day looks a lot like classic FUE. The change comes in the second half.

  1. 01

    Planning

The surgeon checks your donor area and draws the hairline. The graft count is agreed at this point.

  2. 02

    Extraction

Grafts are removed one by one under local anaesthesia and kept chilled in a holding solution.

  3. 03

    Loading the pens

Technicians load each graft into an implanter pen. Several pens are used in rotation to keep grafts out of the body for as short a time as possible.

  4. 04

    Direct implantation

The pen creates the site and places the graft in one push, at the angle the surgeon chooses.

  5. 05

    Aftercare

You get the same washing schedule and recovery timeline as with any FUE session.

Is the DHI premium worth it for you

Pay the premium when it buys something you will actually use. If you work in an office and cannot take two weeks off with a shaved head, partial shaven DHI lets you go back sooner with the recipient area hidden by your own hair. If you are refining a hairline or adding density between existing hairs, the pen lets the team place grafts without cutting channels next to native hair.

Skip it when you need a big session. Above roughly 3,000 grafts, DHI often means two days or a smaller result, and classic FUE with a full shave usually moves more grafts for less money. No head to head study shows DHI grows more hair than well performed FUE, so the person doing the work matters more than the tool.

  • Worth it for discreet recovery and hairline detail
  • Less useful for large crown or Norwood 5 to 6 sessions
  • Ask whether the surgeon or a technician holds the pens
  • Get the shave plan and daily graft cap in the written offer

What to ask before paying a DHI premium

DHI is a tool, not a guarantee. These questions tell you whether it adds value in your case.

  • Why do you recommend DHI for my scalp rather than classic FUE?
  • Who uses the implanter pens during my session?
  • How many grafts can you place by DHI in one day?
  • Is the price different from your standard FUE or sapphire FUE package?
  • Will you shave the recipient area or keep my hair longer?

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is DHI better than FUE?

DHI is a type of FUE with a different implantation step. It can help with precise hairlines and dense packing, but results depend far more on the team's skill than on the tool used.

How much does a DHI hair transplant cost?

Clinics usually charge more for DHI than for standard FUE, because it takes longer and uses implanter pens. Standard FUE packages run at $1,800 to $5,000 in Turkey and $6,500 to $18,000 in the UK.

How much does partial shaven DHI cost?

Partial shaven DHI is usually priced above a shaven session for the same graft count, because the team works around longer hair and places fewer grafts per day. Start from $1,400 to $4,000 for 2,000 grafts in Turkey and ask each clinic for its partial shave figure in writing.

Is unshaven DHI more expensive?

Yes. Unshaven DHI is the slowest option, caps the daily graft count and needs an experienced team, so it is normally the most expensive way to do the same number of grafts. Larger plans may need two surgical days, which can also add a hotel night.

How much is DHI in the USA compared with Turkey?

For 2,000 grafts, base estimates run at $8,000 to $24,000 in the USA against $1,400 to $4,000 in Turkey, before any DHI premium. A US patient going abroad also pays a flight and five to seven days away, which still leaves Turkey well below most US quotes.

Can I keep my hair long with DHI?

Some clinics offer DHI with the recipient area unshaven. The donor area is usually still trimmed. Ask whether unshaven work limits the number of grafts in one session. Your surgeon will explain the trade off.

Is recovery faster after DHI?

Recovery is similar to FUE. Scabs usually clear within about two weeks, transplanted hairs shed, and new growth starts around month three or four. Most people return to office work within a week, depending on how visible the scabs are.

How many grafts can DHI move in one day?

Many clinics place 1,500 to 3,000 grafts by DHI in a day. Larger sessions are possible with a big team, but ask how long grafts stay outside the body. Shorter times outside the body are better for the grafts.
